Course Overview

This course is validated by the University of East Anglia (UEA).

In this programme, you will explore the role that sport and exercise scientists play in physiology, biomechanics, sports medicine, and psychology, and how they enhance human performance and support human health. 

During the course, you will develop the scientific knowledge and practical skills needed for careers in sport, exercise and health. You will explore areas including public health, exercise physiology, psychology, biomechanics, performance analysis, nutrition, rehabilitation and sport pedagogy, preparing you for postgraduate study or employment within the sector.

Course Structure

Year 1 Modules (Level 4):

  • Principles of Biomechanics and Motor Learning
  • Fundamentals of Sport and Exercise Nutrition
  • Sport and Physical Education Pedagogy
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Sports Performance
  • Sport and Exercise Psychology
  • Professional Academic Practice (SES)

Year 2 Modules (Level 5):

  • Applied Biomechanics 
  • Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology 
  • Disability, Sport and inclusive physical education 
  • Physiological and Nutritional Assessment 
  • Research methods in sport and exercise science 
  • Work experience in sport and exercise science (20 hours)

Year 3 Modules (Level 6):

  • Chronic Health Conditions
  • Contemporary issues in sport and exercise psychology
  • Research Project (Dissertation)
  • Sport and Exercise Rehabilitation 
  • Strength & Conditioning (S&C) programming

There is a dedicated Practice Learning team to support students with the placement process.

You will need a minimum of 64 UCAS Tariff Points or above from one or more of the following:

  • A levels
  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma/Diploma/Subsidiary Diploma/Certificate
  • BTEC National Award/Certificate/Diploma
  • International Baccalaureate
  • Access to Higher Education Diploma (minimum 30 credits at Merit or above)
  • GCSE English Language and Maths at Grade C (old specification) or Grade 4 (new specification) or above OR a Level 2 equivalent such as Functional Skills.

For any qualification not identified above the HE Admission Team will determine equivalences through UK ENIC.

Applicants wishing to be considered for entry to the second year of study or wishing to import credits or evidence of prior learning into the course for which they are applying will be considered in accordance with the awarding bodies policy on Accreditation of Prior (Experiential) Learning.

Applications from mature students who do not possess the entry requirements as listed above but who possess related professional experience or professional qualifications are welcome. You will need to demonstrate by interview exceptional entry portfolio (this is likely to include evidence of paid or unpaid work experience) and/or written assessment that you are suitable for the course. Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check:

An enhanced DBS check may be required as part of your work placement and must be paid for by the student. The current cost is £49.50. Applicants who have lived overseas will be required to provide a criminal record check or certificate of good conduct from their country or countries of residence before starting the course. Further information about the DBS process, including how and when to apply, will be provided by the University.

Contact hours: 13 hours per week over two days plus independent study (suggested 30 hours per week).

You are taught through a combination of lectures seminars and workshops which enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of the course disciplines. A range of appropriate facilities including the library and online learning resources, the Learning Resource Centre and the Forum supports your independent learning.

You will receive: 

  • Ongoing feedback as part of your one-to-one sessions with your unit teachers
  • Summative feedback on all formal coursework assessments

Feedback is intended to help you learn and you are encouraged to discuss it with your module leader and can be given in a range of different ways in order to accommodate a variety of learning styles and aptitudes including group critiques recorded verbal feedback and written feedback. Feedback on the Final Major Project/Dissertation module in Year three is provided throughout and through supervision meetings as scheduled.

Work placements:

Work placements are encouraged throughout the duration of the course. However work placement as a mandatory course requirement feeds into your year two module work experience in sport and exercise science. Placements that form part of the work experience in sport and exercise science module are to be negotiated with students and external employers using the standardized placement learning processes and therefore may vary in duration and length. It is advised that the more hours spent in placement, the more development and progress may be shown in your portfolio completed in year 2 of the programme. 

The cost of this course is £9,790 for 2027 entry.

Fees are per academic year for Home/UK students.

  • Initial enhanced DBS Check if required

Please note, there may be additional costs for optional trips and membership of professional bodies.

  • Seek professional development and accreditation via the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Science (CASES) to gain recognition in applied practice which provides the accredited title of Sport and Exercise Scientist
  • Continue to study a Master’s Degree (Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Psychology, Exercise Physiology, Physical Education, Public Health and Allied Professions etc.)
  • Enter employment industries either through direct access routes via additional qualifications also, for example:
    Sport and Exercise Psychologist, Sports Coaching/Physical Education Teacher, Biomechanist, Sport and Exercise Nutritionist, Physiotherapist/Chiropractor, Performance Analyst, Strength and Conditioning Coach/Performance Coach
  • Students also enter the teaching profession at FE levels, securing roles as Associate and Full-time Lecturers. Indeed the college has previously employed former graduates from this programme as lecturers on our various sports programmes
