If you’re considering an apprenticeship, I would say, go for it and keep going until you reach your goal. It’s an incredible opportunity to learn real-world skills, boost your CV, and build a career; all while earning.

My name is Leon Hildersley and I am a 19-year-old Business Administrator Apprentice. I am Level 3 student at South Essex Colleges Group and I am employed by Strathmore Care, based in Head Office.
I was inspired to take the apprenticeship route while studying my Level 2 Business Administration course. My teacher showcased its value as a paid, practical alternative to university across a variety of sectors. Apprenticeships are an opportunity to gain experience alongside a salary.
At Strathmore Care Head Office, I play a significant role in day-to-day operations and lightening the workload for my colleges. I tackle a range of tasks from supervising the congestion of outgoing calls to filing confidential documentation. I love my role as it gives me an opportunity to work independently as well as a part of a team.
I recently worked on a project that promoted our newest care home. Over four days and in challenging weather, I made my way across target areas distributing over 1500 leaflets to the local community.
I have found that the best way to balance my work and studying during my apprenticeship is to make sure I dedicate time to both.
Since starting my apprenticeship, I’ve learned valuable skills that support both Strathmore Care and my own growth. I’m more organised, effectively managing schedules, documents, and workflows. My communication, time management and problem-solving skills have all improved. Over time, my confidence has grown significantly. When I first learned to answer the office phone, I practiced the basics and then handled it on my own.
I’ve also faced challenges, like mastering Excel spreadsheets, categorising costs, and completing tasks for the CEO. But learning on the job helped me overcome these hurdles and grow my technical skills.
My apprenticeship has given me a realistic perspective on work, going beyond theory.
One of my proudest moments was when I earned “Salesperson of the Day” at the Kingsclere Court Easter event.
