Course Overview

The Performing and Production Arts (Musical Theatre) Level 3 Extended Diploma supports you to develop advanced performance skills for progression within musical theatre and the wider performing arts industry. It is suitable if you have a strong interest in musical theatre and want a course that prepares you for further education or professional training.

Throughout the course, learning is vocationally led through a wide range of performance projects. You will develop skills across musical theatre styles and genres, building confidence and versatility as a performer. Training focuses on combining acting, singing and dance, reflecting the demands of musical theatre performance. You will develop singing techniques for solo and ensemble work, alongside musical theatre‑specific acting techniques. Dance training includes ballet, tap and jazz, supporting strong technical foundations and performance quality.

You will also focus on voice development, including articulation and spoken delivery, helping you communicate effectively on stage. Alongside practical training, you will explore music theory, text analysis, research skills and creative contexts to support informed and expressive performance. Body conditioning and fitness form part of the programme, helping you build strength, stamina and physical awareness needed for sustained performance. English and maths are included to support your overall progression and academic development.

By the end of the course, you will have developed strong technical skills, performance experience and professional awareness, supporting progression into higher education, vocational training or continued study within musical theatre and the performing arts sector.

To study this course you will need four GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or above, including English or Maths depending on the vocational subject to be studied, or a Level 2 qualification. You will also be asked to evidence your ability in the subject in the form of an audition. Applicants are required to successfully attend an interview event.
Assessment for this course includes project and portfolio based learning, practical tasks, performance based assessment, self evaluation of own practice, and reflective processes.
This course is free to UK learners under 19 who are not in employment
On completion of this course, you can progress onto vocational drama school training or continue into higher education through a university degree qualification, supporting your development within the performing arts industry.
