Course Overview
This exciting Art and Design Graphic Design course is designed to immerse you in the creative world of visual communication and multimedia.
You will explore a broad range of graphic design techniques and disciplines, developing both digital and hands on skills that reflect how the creative industries work today.
The course gives you the opportunity to experiment, take creative risks, and discover your own visual style while building strong foundations for progression into further or higher education or employment within the creative sector.
Throughout the course, you will develop practical and creative skills across areas such as graphic illustration, typography, logo and branding design, advertising, packaging design, and web page design. You will learn how to visually communicate ideas through drawing, printmaking, and digital media, while also understanding the creative process from initial concept through to finished outcomes. Managing client briefs and curating exhibitions will help you gain insight into professional practice and real world expectations. Alongside practical work, you will study critical and contextual studies to better understand the history, impact, and purpose of graphic design in society.
You will build a strong art and design portfolio that showcases your abilities and creative thinking, supporting progression into careers such as graphic design, illustration, advertising, web and digital design, animation, motion graphics, marketing, publishing, and concept art. Maths and English are also embedded within the course to support your overall development and future progression.
To study this course, you will need Level 2 qualification or GCSEs x 4 at grade 4/C - one to be grade 4/C in ENGLISH OR MATHS dependent on vocational subject to be studied.
You will be asked to provide evidence of your ability in the subject which could be in the form of a portfolio. Successful attendance at interview event
During year one of the course four units are internally set and assessed assignments/projects two units: Visual Recording & Communication and Critical & Contextual Studies are externally set and assessed by BTEC.
During year two five units are internally set and assessed assignments/projects two units:
- Managing a Client Brief and Developing
- Realising Creative Intentions in Art & Design
These are externally set and assessed by BTEC. Your work will be assessed through a mixture of practical tasks supporting written material projects presented in sketchbooks and controlled assessments set by BTEC. Your progress will be supported by regular on-going feedback throughout your course.
