My name is Phil Steed, I am 54 years old and I studied Graphic Design BA (Hons) at University Centre South Essex from 2010 to 2013. This is my story.
Before starting my degree, I had already spent many years working in the design industry. Although I had built a successful career, gaining a degree was something I had always wanted to achieve. Looking back, I realised that when I was 17, I simply wasn't ready to fully commit myself to higher education. Returning as a mature student gave me the opportunity to challenge myself and finally accomplish a goal that had stayed with me for many years.
One of the main reasons I chose University Centre South Essex was its location. I had a young family at the time, so studying close to home was an important consideration. I was also impressed by the facilities and had spoken to a friend who had recently completed the course. Seeing the quality and variety of work showcased at the final exhibition convinced me that this was a course that encouraged creativity and experimentation rather than restricting it.
From the moment I started, I thoroughly enjoyed being back in education. I relished the opportunity to learn again, explore new ideas and challenge myself academically. While some students found the written assignments more demanding, I particularly enjoyed the essays and my dissertation. I also valued the opportunity to develop new practical skills and experiment with different creative approaches. The 3D studio was one of my favourite spaces, giving me the chance to work with a variety of materials and broaden my understanding of design beyond my existing professional experience.
One of my strongest memories of university is the sense of community. I was fortunate to study alongside a fantastic group of classmates, and the teaching staff were knowledgeable, supportive and genuinely enjoyable to work with. The relationships I built during my time on the course made the experience even more rewarding and helped create an environment where everyone could learn from one another.
Although I had already been self-employed for around ten years before starting the degree, the course reinforced the value of collaboration within the creative process. It encouraged me to explore ideas and disciplines outside my usual area of expertise, including undertaking a willow sculpting course as part of one of my projects. It was an experience that sparked a lasting interest and something I would still like to develop further in the future.
Since graduating, I have continued to build my career within the design industry. Most recently, I worked as Head of Creative at Sequel Group before returning to full-time self-employment as a design consultant. Today, I manage a range of corporate accounts, working closely with communications specialists while overseeing projects from concept through to delivery.
Completing my degree remains one of my proudest achievements. Not only did I achieve the qualification I had always wanted, but I graduated with a First. For years, not having a degree had been something that played on my mind, so reaching that goal was incredibly fulfilling. It proved to me that it is never too late to return to education and achieve something important to you.
My connection with University Centre South Essex has continued long after graduation. Each year, I have the opportunity to work with second-year Graphic Design students through portfolio clinics and critique sessions. Supporting the next generation of designers is something I really enjoy, and I would love to continue being involved with students in the future while also exploring opportunities for postgraduate study.
Phil's story highlights how higher education can open doors at any stage of life.
