Course Overview

This Level 2 course is designed for learners who are interested in working with children in early years or primary settings, or who want to explore a future career in childcare and education. It suits those who enjoy supporting children’s learning and development and want to build a strong foundation of knowledge before progressing into further study or work in the sector.

The course focuses on children from birth through to the end of primary age, helping learners understand the needs of children at different stages. Learners will develop an understanding of how to work effectively with babies, children, young people and their families in care and education settings. They will explore the values, behaviours and professional attitudes expected when working with children, alongside the importance of clear communication in supporting children’s wellbeing and development.

The course also introduces safe working practices, health and healthy living, and the principles of child growth and development, helping learners see how theory links to everyday practice in childcare and school environments. By the end of the course, learners will have gained the confidence and basic skills needed to support children in a safe, caring and positive way.

This qualification provides a useful stepping stone towards further childcare or education courses at Level 3, including early years or teaching support pathways, and can help learners prepare for future roles working with children in a variety of early years and primary settings.

To study this course you will need two GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D) or above, which must include Maths or English, or a Level 1 qualification. Applicants are also required to attend an interview successfully, and to provide two references showing suitability to work with children, and an enhanced DBS disclosure.

You will be assessed through coursework and assignments, alongside a work placement of one to two days per week, helping you develop practical experience in a real working environment. During your placement, you will complete a Professional Skills Record, which is assessed by both your workplace supervisor and a centre assessor within early years or primary school settings (a DBS check is required). This is graded Pass or Refer.

You will also complete an externally set synoptic short‑answer examination at the end of the course, graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Your overall result combines your unit assessments, Professional Skills Record and exam grade, leading to a final grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction once all components have been successfully completed.

This course is free to UK learners under 19 who are not in employment.

This qualification may support progression into a range of job roles in the statutory voluntary or private sectors such as:

  • Nursery assistant
  • Classroom assistant
  • Pre-school assistant

or you can go on to study the Level 3 Early Years Care and Education Early Years Educator
