Course Overview
The iQualify Level 2 Award for Food Safety is a one‑day course that supports you to develop essential knowledge of food safety practices. It is suitable if you work, or plan to work, in catering, food manufacturing or retail environments where food is prepared, cooked or handled.
During the course, you can learn about the importance of personal hygiene and maintaining clean work areas to prevent contamination. Learning focuses on understanding how food safety risks occur and how they can be controlled through safe working practices.
You will explore correct food storage methods, including temperature control and safe handling procedures, helping you understand how food safety is maintained throughout preparation and storage. The course also introduces key food safety legislation and explains the role of Environmental Health Officers in monitoring and enforcing standards.
By the end of the course, you will have a clear understanding of food safety responsibilities and the practices required to work safely and legally in food‑handling environments. This qualification supports safe working practices and helps you meet food safety requirements within a range of hospitality, retail and manufacturing settings.
To study this course, you must be over 16 and have a good command of the English language. You must also provide one of the following forms of identification: Valid in-date passport (any nationality), signed in-date UK photocard driving licence, UK biometric residence permit card, birth certificate (BUT, if a birth certificate is presented as proof of identification, an additional form of identification such as a signed bank card, utility bill or a letter issued by a government department must also be provided).
This course is delivered at our Southend City College, Luker Road, Southend on Sea.
Course length is 1 day running from 09:30-17:00 at our Southend City College, Luker Road Southend-on-Sea SS1 1ND. To achieve this qualification you will need to gain 13/20 in a multiple choice test and pass a practical assessment. Those who pass the test will achieve the Highfield Level 2 Award for Food Safety.
The cost of this course is £75. A 20% discount is available for groups of 6 or more when delivered in your workplace. A 10% discount is available for groups of 6 or more when delivered in one of our venues. Dates for groups of 6 or more can be decided by you and we will do our best to accommodate your requested dates.
This qualification can support employment across the hospitality, catering, food retail and food manufacturing industries, and is particularly useful for anyone whose role involves preparing, handling, serving or storing food. Career opportunities include Chef, Commis Chef, Catering Assistant, Kitchen Assistant, Food Service Assistant, Baker, Butcher, Food Retail Assistant, Restaurant or Café Supervisor and Catering Manager. The qualification can also support progression into further training and more senior roles in professional cookery, hospitality management, food production, food retail and food safety.
