Course Overview

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Part-Time for Adults course is designed for adults living in the UK whose first language is not English. It is suitable for learners from EU and overseas backgrounds who want to improve their English skills for work, career development, further study or everyday life. Throughout the course, learners develop key language skills including reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar, helping them communicate accurately and confidently in a range of real-life situations.

Lessons are practical and focused on everyday communication, supporting learners in the workplace, education and daily activities. Learning takes place in a supportive environment where learners can build confidence at an appropriate pace and develop their language skills step by step. The course covers reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar, and learners may have the opportunity to take examinations in reading, writing, and speaking and listening at the end of the programme.

This course is offered on a part-time basis with classes available during the daytime or evening, providing flexibility around work, family or other commitments. Daytime classes are delivered at the Southend Campus and Thurrock Campus, while evening classes are available at the Southend Campus, Thurrock Campus and the Centre for Digital Technologies at Basildon College.

By the end of the course, learners will have improved their ability to communicate in English and feel more confident using the language in both personal and professional settings. The course also supports progression to more advanced ESOL courses, further training or employment opportunities.

There are no entry requirements though you will need an interview and assessment with an ESOL teacher.
At the end of the course you will have the opportunity to take exams in reading writing and speaking and listening. Please note this qualification is only recognised in the UK and is not an internationally recognised exam.
The cost of this course is £700 for daytime and £525 for evening delivery.
You will be able to progress to a more advanced ESOL course or to other courses at the College if your English is at a suitable level.
