Course Overview

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Full‑Time for School Leavers course is designed for young people living in the UK whose first language is not English. It is suitable for EU and overseas learners who want to improve their English skills to support everyday life, future study and progression into employment.

Throughout the course, learners develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, alongside grammar to support clear and confident communication. Lessons are practical and focused on real‑life situations, helping learners use English more effectively in education, the workplace and the wider community. In addition to English language learning, the course includes maths through Functional Skills or GCSE, supporting learners to strengthen essential numeracy skills.

Learners also complete employability or personal and social development units, which focus on citizenship, confidence, teamwork and preparation for progression and work. A key part of the course is the opportunity to take part in work experience, allowing learners to apply their English skills in a real working environment and gain valuable insight into employment expectations.

By the end of the course, learners will have improved their language skills, confidence and employability, with clear pathways into further study, training or work. This course is delivered at our Southend and Thurrock campuses, as well as our Centre for Digital Technologies in Basildon.

There are no entry requirements though you will need an interview and assessment with an ESOL teacher.
Exams are taken in each term and spread out throughout the course. Please note this qualification is only recognised in the UK and is not an internationally recognised exam.
This course is free to UK learners under 19 who are not in employment
You will be able to progress to a more advanced ESOL course or to other courses at the College if your English is at a suitable level.
