Course Overview

The Cybersecurity Level 1 Award is designed for learners who want to develop a basic understanding of cybercrime and how digital systems and information are protected. It is suitable for those who are new to the subject and want to build confidence in using digital technology safely, as well as learners who are interested in how cybersecurity affects everyday life and work.

During the course, learners explore what cybercrime is, the risks it creates, and the impact it can have on individuals and organisations. They learn about routine protective methods used to maintain cybersecurity, including user access control and the basic principles behind vulnerability and penetration testing. The course also introduces legislation and codes of conduct linked to cybersecurity, helping learners understand their responsibilities when using digital systems and handling information.

By the end of the course, learners will have a clearer awareness of online risks and the steps that can be taken to reduce them. The qualification supports progression into further digital or IT study and is also relevant to roles in other industries where digital skills are important, such as finance, marketing, manufacturing and engineering. This is a short, single‑unit course and is free for learners who meet the eligibility criteria, making it an accessible starting point for building cybersecurity knowledge. This course is delivered at our Centre for Digital Technologies in Basildon.

You will be expected to have a Level 1 English qualification and be confident using a computer. Previous knowledge of the web and cyber security is desirable however no prior knowledge of coding is necessary.

You will be assessed using a range of methods including practical tasks and written coursework, which will culminate in a portfolio of evidence demonstrating your understanding of cybersecurity principles.

This course is free for those who meet the entry requirements

This part time evening course is free to adult learners that meet that criteria.
Successful candidates can progress to the Level 2 Award in Cybersecurity or another Level 2 IT course such as IT - Skills for work.
