Course Overview
The Level 2 Welding Apprenticeship is designed for learners who want to develop a practical career in welding and fabrication within engineering and manufacturing environments. As an apprentice, you will gain the essential skills, knowledge and professional behaviours needed to become fully competent as a General Welder, specialising in arc welding processes, while earning and gaining real workplace experience.
Throughout the apprenticeship, you will combine on‑the‑job training with college‑based learning to develop a strong understanding of welding principles and techniques. You will learn how to safely use welding tools and equipment, carry out general welding tasks to industry standards, and apply health and safety practices in a workshop or site environment. By the end of the programme, you will be equipped with the practical skills and confidence required to progress within the welding and engineering industry.
The apprenticeship begins with an induction period where you are introduced to the programme structure, expectations and assessment requirements, alongside completing English and maths diagnostics with support provided where needed. You will study key introductory topics including health and safety and professional behaviours to prepare you for both college and workplace learning. You will then combine weekly day‑release college sessions with practical training in the workplace, developing welding skills while working towards the ABC Level 2 Certificate in Welding and Fabrication.
Your progress is supported through regular workplace visits, ongoing feedback, progress reviews and the development of an e‑portfolio of evidence. In the final stage, you prepare for independent End‑Point Assessment, which confirms your competence through a knowledge test, professional discussion and practical assessment.
Successful completion leads to full apprenticeship certification and provides a strong foundation for progression within the welding and engineering industry. For more information about this apprenticeship, please contact the Workforce team on 01702 221800 or email apprenticeships@southessex.ac.uk
