Course Overview
The Design, Surveying and Planning T Level is designed for learners who are interested in shaping the built environment and exploring careers within architecture, engineering, construction and the wider planning sector. It is well suited to those who enjoy problem solving, design and technical learning, and who want a programme that combines classroom study with real‑world industry experience.
Throughout the course, learners develop a broad understanding of how buildings and infrastructure are designed, planned and delivered. They explore architectural design principles, building materials and construction methods, and learn how digital tools such as computer‑aided design software are used to produce professional drawings and plans. Learners also study building regulations and standards, helping them understand how safety, compliance and quality are managed within the industry.
The course also introduces land surveying, urban planning and environmental sustainability. Learners gain insight into surveying techniques, mapping and data analysis, alongside an understanding of how land is measured, assessed and legally defined. They explore urban design and land use planning, considering how towns and cities develop, while learning about sustainable design, energy‑efficient buildings and the environmental impact of construction projects.
In the second year, learners specialise in civil engineering, developing knowledge of structures, infrastructure and construction materials. This includes understanding how roads, transport systems and drainage are designed and built, as well as how engineering decisions affect safety, durability and performance. Learners also develop professional skills such as project planning, communication, teamwork and ethical practice, which are essential for working in the built environment.
By the end of the programme, learners will have developed strong technical knowledge, practical skills and industry awareness, supported by a substantial industry placement. The Design, Surveying and Planning T Level provides a clear route into higher education, apprenticeships or employment within architecture, surveying, civil engineering or planning, preparing learners for a wide range of professional roles within the sector.
This course is free to UK learners under 19 who are not in employment.
On successful completion of the Design, Surveying and Planning T Level, you will be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills needed to progress into a variety of roles across the architecture, engineering and construction sectors. Career pathways may include roles such as architectural assistant, civil engineering technician, surveying technician, urban planner, sustainability consultant, construction project coordinator or Building Information Modelling (BIM) technician. The qualification also supports progression into further education, including Higher National Diplomas or degree study in subjects such as construction management, architecture, civil engineering or urban planning, providing a strong platform for long‑term career development within the built environment.
