Course Overview

The Sport and Active Leisure Level 1 Diploma supports you to gain an introduction to sport, fitness and active leisure while developing essential skills for progression to further study. It is suitable if you have an interest in sport or physical activity and want a practical, supportive starting point within this sector. During the course, you will explore what it means to work in sport and active leisure and take part in exercise and fitness activities that help you build confidence and physical awareness. Learning focuses on understanding how the body works during physical activity, including the components and functions of the body, and recognising risks and hazards linked to sport and exercise. You will develop knowledge of healthy lifestyles, including planning a healthy diet and creating your own fitness programme.

The course also introduces basic coaching activities, where you will learn how sport and active leisure sessions are planned and delivered. You will support a session leader in planning and delivering activities, helping you understand teamwork and responsibility within a sporting environment. Alongside sport‑specific learning, you will develop employability skills such as time management, teamwork, setting and meeting work targets, and preparing for employment. This includes searching for jobs, completing applications and preparing for interviews, helping you build confidence for future progression. Maths and English are included to support your overall development.

By the end of the course, you will have developed basic sport and fitness knowledge, practical experience and transferable skills, supporting progression to further sport‑related study or training in active leisure pathways.

To study this course you will need two GCSEs at grade 2 (grade E) or above, (which must include Maths or English), or an Entry 3 qualification. Applicants are also required to successfully attend a transition event.
You will be assessed on this course by building a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates your knowledge, skills and practical understanding across a range of units.
This course is free to UK learners under 19 who are not in employment
On successful completion of this course, you can progress onto Level 2 programmes such as the Sport and Active Leisure Level 2 Diploma or the Physical Activity, Fitness and Exercise Science Level 2 Diploma, subject to meeting entry requirements.
