Course Overview

The Forensics and Criminal Investigation Level 3 Extended Diploma is designed for learners who are interested in science and how it is applied within criminal and forensic investigations. It is suitable for those who enjoy analytical thinking, problem solving and practical investigation, and who want to progress to higher education or a career within science‑related fields.

Throughout the course, learners develop a strong foundation in scientific principles and practical laboratory techniques. They build skills in scientific investigation, learning how evidence is collected, analysed and interpreted within forensic and criminal justice contexts. Understanding how science supports investigative processes is a key focus of the programme. Learners explore a wide range of specialist forensic topics, including forensic and criminal investigation procedures, forensic psychology, forensic genetics, environmental forensics and traffic collision investigation.

The course also introduces forensic anthropology and archaeology, alongside an understanding of human body systems and physiology, helping learners see how different scientific disciplines contribute to forensic work. Alongside subject knowledge, maths and English skills are supported where needed to strengthen research, reporting and analytical ability.

By the end of the course, learners will have developed a broad set of scientific and investigative skills, preparing them for progression into higher education or related careers in forensic science, criminal investigation or wider scientific fields.

To study this course, you will need a Level 2 qualification or four GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or above, including Science at grade 4 (grade C) and Maths at grade 4 (grade C). Applicants are also required to attend an interview successfully as part of the entry process.
Assessment for this course includes a combination of external assessment under examination conditions, coursework assignment tasks such as written reports, graphs, posters and projects, and performance observation assessments to evaluate practical skills and application of knowledge.

This course is free to UK learners under 19 who are not in employment.
