Course Overview

The Entry to the Uniformed Public Services Level 3 Diploma is designed for learners who are thinking about a future career in the public services, such as the police, fire service, armed forces or other related roles. It is a full‑time advanced Level 3 qualification that helps learners explore the sector and understand what is required to progress into uniformed public service careers. 

Throughout the course, learners gain a broad understanding of the public services while developing essential skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership and problem solving. Learning takes place through a mix of classroom‑based lessons, research tasks, presentations, practical activities and group work, helping learners build confidence, discipline and professionalism. Learners also take part in physical and outdoor activities, supporting fitness, resilience and wellbeing. 

The course includes a range of practical experiences, such as visits to public service organisations and input from guest speakers working within the sector. Learners may also take part in expeditions, some of which may include overnight stays, giving insight into the physical and mental demands of public service roles. Functional skills or GCSE English and maths are included for learners who have not yet achieved a grade 4, supporting progression and employability. We expect all public services students to wear a uniform when they attend college, reflecting the standards and expectations of the sector. Learners will also need suitable clothing for fitness and practical activities. 

By the end of the course, learners will have developed a strong understanding of the public services, key employability skills and a clear foundation for progression into further study, training or recruitment pathways within the uniformed services.

You will require 4 x GCSEs at grade 4/C one of which must be English or Maths and successful attendance at interview event
You will be assessed through a range of methods, including presentations, reports, essays, exhibitions and discussions, which allow you to demonstrate both your understanding of the subject and your ability to communicate ideas effectively.
This course is free to UK learners under 19 who are not in employment
Learners can progress into higher education at university or college to study subjects such as criminology or sociology. Alternatively, they may apply for a career within the public services, including the Police Service, Ambulance Service, Fire and Rescue Service, Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, Customs and Excise, or the Prison Service.
