Course Overview
This course provides a broad and practical introduction to fashion and design, preparing you for progression to higher level study or employment within the fashion industry.
Learning is delivered through industry focused, project based work that reflects current professional practice.
You will study design, illustration, pattern cutting, garment construction, tailoring techniques, textiles, fabric knowledge, and fashion forecasting. Live briefs, strong industry links, and opportunities for work experience support your professional and employability development throughout the course.
In the second year, subject to learner numbers, you may specialise in either Fashion Construction or Fashion Communication. This allows you to develop more focused technical skills and produce a strong professional portfolio tailored to your chosen pathway.
The course takes a holistic and practical approach, giving you opportunities to explore personal development alongside relevant professional, technical, and employability skills. Project briefs are designed to be flexible, current, and industry appropriate, encouraging creativity, problem solving, and independence.
Maths and English are embedded within the programme of study where required.
To study this course, you will need four GCSEs at grade 4/grade C including maths English and an art-related subject. Alternatively the Art and Design Level 2 Extended Certificate plus maths and English at grade 4/grade C or equivalent.
You will be asked to provide evidence of your ability in the subject which could be in the form of a portfolio. Successful attendance at interview event.
You can progress on to the Art and Design Level 4 Foundation Diploma or other Higher Education programmes at university or college., including our degrees at University Centre South Essex. Alternatively, progress into professional employment in the fashion industry or related fields.
