Course Overview

The Level 3 Diploma Technical Specialist in Sports Massage and Rehabilitation supports you to develop specialist knowledge and practical skills in sports massage therapy. It is suitable if you are a fitness, sport or wellbeing professional looking to expand your skills and provide hands‑on support to clients with muscular tension, restricted movement or dysfunctional soft tissue.

During the course, you can develop a detailed understanding of anatomy and physiology as it applies to sports massage therapy. Learning focuses on how soft tissue dysfunction occurs, how the body responds to injury and repair, and how massage techniques are used to support recovery and performance in non‑acute conditions. You will also develop practical skills in client consultation, assessment and treatment planning. This includes understanding how to assess individual needs, plan appropriate treatments and deliver sports massage therapy safely and effectively.

The course covers treatment techniques, appropriate aftercare and the use of remedial exercises to support ongoing recovery and movement. Professional practice is an important part of the qualification, helping you develop confidence working with clients in gym, clinic or self‑employed environments.

By the end of the course, you will have developed the knowledge, practical ability and professional awareness needed to offer sports massage treatments that support rehabilitation, performance and overall muscular health within your scope of practice.

You will require four GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or above, including Maths or English. As sports massage is physically demanding, a suitable level of physical fitness is essential. The course also involves communication activities such as discussing, presenting, reading, and writing, so learners should have communication skills pitched at Level 3.
You will be assessed through a combination of a knowledge assessment, written assignments, a case study, and practical observation with questioning.
This course is free to UK learners under 19 who are not in employment
After completing this course, you can progress into employment as a professional masseuse, working in settings such as gyms, sports clubs, health clinics, or wellness centres. You may also choose to become self employed as a professional masseuse, building your own client base. For those wishing to further develop their expertise, there are opportunities to progress into further massage related study and specialist qualifications.
