Course Overview

The Level 3 Diploma Technical Occupational Entry in Personal Training supports you to build on your existing gym instruction skills and develop the advanced knowledge needed to work as a personal trainer. It is suitable if you are ready to move beyond general fitness instruction and want to coach clients more closely to help them achieve individual health, fitness and lifestyle goals.

During the course, you will develop a deeper understanding of applied anatomy and physiology, nutrition for exercise and health, and how lifestyle, wellbeing and common medical conditions can affect training. Learning focuses on how these areas inform safe, effective and personalised programme design, allowing you to support clients on a one‑to‑one or small group basis. You will also develop practical skills in designing and delivering tailored personal training programmes. This includes encouraging positive health and fitness behaviours, adapting sessions to meet individual needs and supporting long‑term behaviour change.

The course reflects the role personal training plays in improving health and physical activity across communities. Professionalism and business awareness form an important part of the course, helping you understand how personal trainers work within gyms, independently or in other fitness settings.

By the end of the course, you will have developed the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to progress into personal training roles and support others to lead healthier, more active lives.

To study this course, learners should hold a Level 2 qualification in Physical Activity, Fitness and Exercise Science from the Personal Training Academy or a similar qualification, plus 4 GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) OR above, including Maths or English. Applicants must successfully attend an interview event. As the course involves physical exertion and individual participation, a suitable level of physical fitness is essential. Learners should also have communication skills at Level 2, including the ability to discuss, present, read and write effectively.
You will be assessed through a combination of a knowledge assessment, written assignments, a case study, and practical observation with questioning.
This course is free to UK learners under 19 who are not in employment
After the course, you can progress on to further qualifications such as the Active IQ Level 3 Technical Specialist in Sports Massage Therapy Diploma. You may also choose to enrol on more specialist personal training programmes to further develop your skills and support client growth. Employment opportunities include working within the fitness industry in a range of gym, health, and wellbeing settings.
