My name is Spencer Glen. I am a self-employed artist and animation graduate, currently running my own creative business and selling my work at comic conventions across the UK.
I studied at South Essex Colleges Group from 2016 to 2018, before returning to education at University Centre South Essex from 2021 to 2024, where I completed a BA (Hons) Animation and achieved a First Class degree.
I originally chose to study at South Essex Colleges Group because it was local and offered a Creative Media course. After taking a break from education, I decided to return and continue my studies at the University Centre. Having already built relationships with tutors and being familiar with the environment made it feel like the right place to refocus and move forward. Looking back, returning to study was one of the best decisions I have made.
My journey has not always been straightforward. During my earlier time at college, I faced personal and health challenges that affected my studies. Taking time away allowed me to rebuild my confidence and come back with a clearer sense of purpose. With the support and encouragement of my tutors, I was able to settle back into learning and fully commit to my degree.
During my time at the University Centre, I developed both creatively and personally. The course helped me build confidence, form strong connections with others and improve my ability to manage my time, set goals and meet deadlines. I was encouraged to push my creativity further, especially in areas like character design and anatomy, which are now central to my work.
Since graduating, I have taken a different route by becoming self-employed. What started as a single piece of artwork for a comic convention quickly grew into a creative business. I now travel across England and Scotland, selling my artwork, prints and products at conventions. Over time, I have built my skills, expanded my range and developed a growing community around my work.
My time at South Essex Colleges Group and the University Centre played an important role in preparing me for this. The supportive environment, dedicated tutors and access to industry-standard equipment and software helped me build both the skills and confidence I needed to succeed.
One of my favourite memories from my time studying was the trip to Japan in my third year. It was a unique experience and a great way to finish my studies alongside my classmates and tutors.
For me, one of the most valuable aspects of higher education is having the opportunity to focus on something you are passionate about while building practical skills and confidence. I would highly recommend South Essex Colleges Group and University Centre South Essex for their supportive staff, engaging courses and commitment to helping you achieve your potential.
Looking ahead, I want to continue growing my creative business, reaching new audiences and developing my work further. I would also love to move into teaching in the future, sharing my experience and supporting others in the same way I was supported.
