Poppy Hillman-Crouch

At University Centre South Essex, we help you turn your creativity into a practical and rewarding career. Poppy’s journey shows how the right course can give you the skills, confidence and industry connections to succeed. With access to professional facilities and real experiences in the world of theatre and costume, her story highlights how you can develop your craft and take your place in the creative industries.

My name is Poppy Hillman-Crouch, and I am a 2024 graduate of the BA (Hons) Costume Construction course at University Centre South Essex.

I first discovered the course during a visit to the Royal Ballet and Opera’s Bob and Tamar Manoukian Production Workshop at High House Production Park. Seeing the costumes up close and learning how different departments come together to create a production was inspiring. I knew straight away that this was something I wanted to be part of.

What really stood out to me was the opportunity to study at a University Centre with strong links to the Royal Ballet and Opera, including access to their store and archive. I was looking for a course that would allow me to stay close to home while gaining valuable, hands-on experience in a professional workroom environment. This course offered both.

During my degree, I developed a wide range of technical and professional skills that I now use every day in my work as a freelance costume maker and Wardrobe Assistant at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester. From confidently using industrial sewing machines and overlockers to mastering fitting, measurements and pattern drafting, these foundational skills have been essential in my career.

One of my favourite parts of the course was the tailoring unit. In my third year, I created a 1950s RAF uniform and a Georgian riding habit for my grandparents. Having them come to campus for fittings made the experience even more special. It gave me the chance to develop my skills further while working with different body types, and it is a memory I will always value.

The course prepared me well for working in the industry, not only through technical training but also by helping me understand the professional side of the role. I learned how to build a portfolio and website, promote my work, secure opportunities and plan for career progression. Visits and talks from industry professionals also gave me a clear insight into the different paths I could take after graduating.

My first role after graduating was as a freelance costume maker at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester. This began as a 14-week contract and was later extended, leading to further work as a wardrobe assistant on their pantomime production. The experience I gained during my course, including work experience at the theatre, played a key role in helping me secure this opportunity. Since then, I have continued to return, and this year marks my fifth year working on their pantomime productions.

Since graduating, I have worked on a range of exciting projects across theatre, film and freelance commissions. My work has included everything from creating detailed film replica costumes and ballet bodices to designing bold, creative pieces for pantomime. I enjoy the variety of my work and the opportunity to collaborate with talented people across the industry.

Looking back, my time on the course shaped my career in so many ways. The knowledge, experience and support I received gave me the confidence to pursue my goals. It was a close-knit and supportive environment, with dedicated tutors and peers I am still in touch with today.

The partnership with the Royal Ballet and Opera was especially valuable, giving me real insight into the industry and helping me stand out as I progressed into my career.

If you are thinking about studying costume construction, I would really encourage you to take that step. The course gives you a strong set of skills while allowing you to be creative and develop your own style. You have the freedom to focus on the areas you enjoy most, supported by knowledgeable and encouraging lecturers.
