My name is Melanie Ginsberg, I am 42 years old and I am currently studying for my degree in Graphic Design and Illustration at University Centre South Essex. This is my story.
I am now going into the third year of my degree, following the illustration pathway. Before returning to study, I worked for myself and spent time as a stay-at-home mum. During the COVID period, I decided it was the right time to focus on my future and develop my skills, so I began studying graphic design from a basic level and gradually progressed onto the degree.
I chose UCSE mainly because it is local to me, but also because the course stood out. I liked the idea of smaller class sizes, which made the learning environment feel more personal and supportive.
One of the things I enjoy most about the course is how practical it is. There are opportunities to take part in work placements and live briefs, where you work on projects for real clients. These experiences have helped me understand what working in the industry is really like and have given me the confidence to start taking on freelance work.
The people at the college have been a big part of my experience. We are a really diverse group of students from different backgrounds, and we support each other well. The lecturers are encouraging and approachable, which makes it easier to ask questions, try new things and keep improving.
During my time on the course, I have developed a range of skills that are essential in the design industry. I have built confidence using Adobe software and learned more about composition, typography, colour theory and layout. These skills have helped me produce more professional work and feel more prepared for future opportunities.
Having access to industry-standard equipment, including Apple Mac computers and Adobe software, has been really valuable. It means the tools we use are the same as those used in the workplace, helping make the transition into industry smoother. Being able to work both on campus and at home has also made studying more flexible.
One of my proudest moments so far was achieving an ‘A’ grade on an assignment. It meant a lot to me, especially as the brief was open to interpretation, and it really boosted my confidence in my work.
The course has also encouraged me to explore new creative techniques, including lino cutting and printmaking, which I have really enjoyed. Taking part in exhibitions and sharing my work has helped me feel more confident in presenting myself as an artist.
I would definitely recommend UCSE. The small class sizes, supportive staff and welcoming environment make a real difference, especially if you are returning to education or balancing study with other responsibilities.
Looking ahead, my goal is to become a book illustrator and work on book covers. I would love to work with well-known publishing houses and see my work in print, bringing stories to life through illustration.
