Lisa Dear

At University Centre South Essex, we believe that education can be transformative at any stage of life. Whether you are returning after personal challenges or pursuing a long-held passion, our courses are designed to support you every step of the way. Lisa’s journey is a powerful example of resilience, determination and the courage to follow your passion, even when the path is not straightforward.

My name is Lisa Dear, and I graduated in 2024 from the BA (Hons) Costume Construction Degree at University Centre South Essex, delivered in partnership with the Royal Ballet and Opera and UAL. This is my story.

After undergoing cancer treatment in 2017, I felt a strong need to do something for myself, something that could also open the door to a new career. When I came across the Costume Construction course, I was immediately drawn to it. The idea of developing my sewing skills while gaining a degree in something I truly loved felt like the opportunity I had been waiting for.

What really stood out to me was the focus on costume rather than fashion. I attended an open day at the Purfleet studio, and seeing the costumes on display, especially the tutus, made a lasting impression. I knew I wanted to learn how to create pieces like that. The partnership with the Royal Ballet and Opera was also a huge influence on my decision. Having access to such a respected organisation, along with meeting the tutors, confirmed I had found the right course.

It was important for me to balance study with work, and the location of the studios made this possible. Being able to travel easily along my train line meant I could manage both commitments, making the course more accessible.

During the degree, I developed a wide range of technical skills, including pattern cutting, tailoring, tutu construction, fabric dyeing and interpreting designs into finished garments. One of the highlights of my studies was completing a placement at the Royal Ballet and Opera in Purfleet, where I worked on tutus for Cinderella. This experience gave me invaluable insight into working in a professional costume environment.

My personal project was another key moment in my journey. I collaborated with students from other courses, including hair and makeup and photography, and organised a professional photoshoot at The Backstage Centre. This helped me understand the teamwork and coordination required to bring a creative vision to life. Seeing my work displayed publicly as part of the Royal Ballet and Opera Prize and at the end-of-year exhibition was incredibly rewarding.

University was different to how I had imagined. It is very self-directed, and I quickly realised that you get out what you put in. With the support of my tutors and my own determination, I pushed myself further than I thought possible. That challenge helped me grow in confidence and develop skills I never expected to gain.

My journey wasn’t without its challenges. I originally started the course in 2018 but had to pause my studies due to medical reasons. I returned in 2022 and completed my degree in 2024, despite undergoing major surgery during my final months and continuing to work part-time. There were times when finishing felt impossible, but I was determined to keep going. With support from my employer and student finance, I was able to complete what I had started.

Since graduating, I have taken on small commissions for friends and family. One of my favourite projects was creating an Angel Gabriel costume and wings for a nativity performance, something I am incredibly proud of.

One of the greatest honours of my journey has been having my Costume in Art piece selected for display as part of the course’s 10th anniversary exhibition at the Royal Ballet and Opera in Covent Garden. Seeing my work featured in such a prestigious venue is something I never imagined when I first applied.

While I am not currently working full-time in the costume industry due to ongoing considerations, completing this degree has been one of my proudest achievements. It is a dream I didn’t even know I had until I took that first step.

If you’re considering studying Costume Construction, I would absolutely encourage you to explore it. The facilities, tutors and industry connections are exceptional, and the exhibition is a great way to see what you can achieve. It may be one of the most challenging things you do, but it will also be one of the most rewarding.

If Lisa’s story has inspired you, now is the perfect time to explore your creative potential. Our Costume Construction courses offer the skills, experience and support you need to succeed. Take the first step and begin your journey with University Centre South Essex today.
