My name is Lindsey, I am 41 years old and I am currently studying BA (Hons) Graphic Design and Illustration at University Centre South Essex. This is my story.
After the pandemic and the birth of my son, I found myself reflecting on my career and thinking about what I really wanted for the future. I saw it as an opportunity to invest in myself and return to something I felt passionate about. That is what led me to choose the Graphic Design and Illustration course.
Before coming to UCSE, I had completed an NVQ in fashion and textiles when I was younger. After that, I moved away from education and spent over 20 years working in roles across retail management, hospitality, catering and healthcare. I also travelled widely, which gave me valuable life experience, but I always knew I wanted to return to a creative path.
I decided to attend an open day to explore my options and spoke to the course lead, Steve Page. Seeing the work of previous students and hearing about the course helped me realise that this was exactly what I had been looking for. That moment gave me the confidence to apply.
Before starting my degree, I took part in the Transition to Higher Education course, which helped me prepare for study again. It allowed me to build my skills, challenge myself and connect with others who were also returning to education. This experience really strengthened my confidence and made me feel ready to begin my degree.
During my time at UCSE, I have developed both creatively and personally. The course encourages you to challenge yourself, explore new ideas and grow your skills in a supportive environment. I have particularly valued the chance to improve my critical thinking, learning how to analyse the world around me and approach design in a deeper and more thoughtful way.
We also have access to industry-standard equipment and software, which has helped me build practical skills that are relevant to the workplace. The teaching team, led by John Chandler, are incredibly supportive, patient and encouraging, which makes a real difference when returning to study.
All of my lessons have been engaging and rewarding. I have especially enjoyed the theory lectures, where we hear from creatives across the art and design department. These sessions have helped broaden my understanding of the industry and inspired new ways of thinking.
The college has also supported me in preparing for my future career. There are dedicated sessions with the careers team, offering guidance and advice to help you plan your next steps and feel confident moving into employment.
One of my proudest moments so far has been winning the SECG Christmas card competition in 2023. It was a fun and rewarding opportunity to share my work and see it recognised.
Being part of this course has helped me learn so much from both my tutors and my peers. It has reminded me that learning does not stop and that it is never too late to develop new skills or follow a different path.
I would highly recommend UCSE. The staff are welcoming and supportive, and the resources available really help you succeed. It is a place where you are encouraged to grow and achieve your goals.
Looking ahead, I hope to build a career in creative research or theory, continuing to develop my ideas and contribute to the creative industry.
