My name is Gabriel Buckley, and I am currently studying Creative Media and Promotion at University Centre South Essex.
I chose to study at UCSE after seeing a close friend thrived on the same course. At the time, I felt unsure about my direction, but something about the course stood out to me. It gave me a sense of possibility that I had not felt before.
Before coming to UCSE, I spent a year studying Film Production in Lincoln and worked as a chef for five years. Although I initially believed film was the right path for me, being fully immersed in it made me lose that passion, leaving me feeling uncertain about what to do next. When I returned to Southend, I started to reconnect with my creativity through photography and videography. At first, I combined this with my work in the kitchen, but it quickly developed into a passion for portrait and fashion work, which led me to this course.
My time at UCSE has helped me grow in many ways. I have developed confidence in my abilities, become more open to new opportunities and learned how to engage with professionals in the creative industry. I have also realised that setbacks are part of the process, helping me build resilience and problem-solving skills. Alongside this, my confidence in social situations has improved, which has been invaluable when networking and collaborating.
Studying here has not only prepared me for a career, but also supported my personal development. What began as a hobby is now a clear direction for my future. I have learned how to manage multiple projects at once, improving my organisation and ability to work across different creative areas.
Alongside my studies, I work as a freelance photographer and videographer, focusing on helping brands strengthen their identity through visual content. I started this journey three years ago as a hobby, but it has grown into a developing business with a steady client base, and I continue to push my work forward.
One of my favourite parts of the course has been collaborating with other students and creatives on shoots. Working with peers, models and other professionals has been a highlight, particularly organising test shoots and developing ideas together. These experiences have helped me grow creatively and build confidence in my work.
For me, one of the best things about higher education is the freedom it offers. You have the opportunity to explore your interests in depth and shape your learning around your goals, creating a more personal and meaningful experience.
I would highly recommend South Essex Colleges Group and University Centre South Essex. The lecturers are supportive and approachable, and they create an environment where you feel encouraged to grow and develop as an individual.
One of my proudest achievements so far has been having my work published in several magazines, including Artells, ASBO and Marikas. I have also submitted work to the D and AD Awards with Olivia Woolford, which was a particularly rewarding milestone in my creative journey.
Looking ahead, my ambition is to establish my own production house. I want it to be a space not only for my own work, but also a platform to support and showcase other creatives. I am passionate about creating opportunities for others and contributing to a wider creative community.
