Bringing fan animation to life
Edward Mortimer, a student at University Centre South Essex, has been developing his skills through an exciting collaborative fan animation project, helping to reimagine the 2008 Bionicle storyline.
Having been a long-time fan, Edward was eager to get involved when he discovered the opportunity.
“I wanted to help create something I love.”
The project brought together a global community of creatives, including voice actors, animators and 3D modellers. For Edward, one of the most rewarding aspects has been working alongside people who share the same passion.
“It’s uplifting to work with people who share the same passion.”
This collaborative environment has not only made the experience enjoyable but has also expanded his network, creating opportunities for future creative partnerships.
Learning through doing
Edward’s primary role in the project focuses on keying, a technical process involving green screen editing. While this was not an area he had strong experience in initially, he saw it as an opportunity to push himself and learn something new.
“I didn’t know much about keying when I started, but I’ve learned a lot through hands-on experience.”
By stepping outside his comfort zone, he has been able to develop practical skills that are highly valuable in the animation and post-production industries.
His experience highlights an important lesson for students and creatives alike: growth often comes from taking on challenges rather than staying within familiar areas.
The value of collaboration
Working within a diverse team has also shown Edward the importance of different perspectives in creative projects.
“Differing opinions and skill sets are what make a project tick.”
Each contributor brings unique ideas and approaches, helping to shape a more complete and engaging final product. This collaborative process mirrors real industry environments, where teamwork and communication are essential.
Staying motivated
Seeing the dedication of others involved in the project has been a strong source of motivation for Edward. Being part of a committed team has encouraged him to stay focused and continuously improve his work.
“Everyone’s working hard, and that inspires me to do my part.”
This sense of shared purpose is what drives many creative projects forward and helps individuals push beyond their perceived limits.
Looking ahead
Edward’s involvement in the project has not only strengthened his technical abilities but also given him valuable experience in teamwork, communication and project development. These are all key skills that will support his future career in the creative industry.
His advice to others is simple but powerful:
“Don’t be afraid to join a project in an area you’re not strong in. It’s a great way to learn on the job.”
