My name is Daisy Whittaker, I am 27 years old, and I studied Interior Design at University Centre South Essex. This is my story.
I began my journey by studying 3D Design at South Essex Colleges Group before progressing to Interior Design at UCSE, where I graduated with a First Class Honours degree.
Before coming to SECG, I completed my GCSEs at FitzWimarc School and gained some early insight into the industry through work experience at a kitchen design company. This helped spark my interest, but it was during my studies at college and university that I really developed my skills and direction.
I chose to study at UCSE because of the quality of teaching and the opportunity to gain a UAL qualification while staying local. Being able to live at home meant I could continue working part-time and stay close to friends and family, which helped me stay focused and balanced throughout my studies.
During my time on the course, there was a strong focus on employability and industry links. We completed work experience and dedicated units that helped us prepare for the professional world, including building our CVs and portfolios. This made a real difference when it came to taking the next step after graduating.
The course helped me grow in confidence, especially through collaborative sessions where we shared ideas and discussed our projects. Presenting our work regularly meant I became more comfortable explaining my designs, which is something I now do every day in my career.
Alongside developing practical skills in software such as Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, SketchUp and V-Ray, I also learned hand drawing, model making and how to bring ideas to life through mood boards and design concepts. Having access to industry-standard equipment, including laser cutters and 3D printers, helped prepare me for the expectations of the workplace.
One of my favourite memories from my time studying was the end-of-year exhibition at the OXO Tower in London. It was an incredible experience to see all of our work come together and to share it with family, friends and industry professionals.
After graduating, I secured a role as a Junior Designer at Kelly Hoppen Interiors, where I worked on a range of high-end projects, including cruise ships and private residences. This experience gave me valuable industry insight and helped me develop further as a designer.
Since then, I have gone on to start my own business, Daisy Whittaker Designs. I specialise in residential interiors and have worked on projects across Essex, London, Kent and internationally. Alongside running my business, I also lecture part-time at the university, which allows me to support and inspire the next generation of designers.
One of my proudest achievements has been building my business and running it full-time. My work has been featured in publications such as Essex Living and Essex Life, and I was honoured to be recognised as ‘Best Full-Service Residential Design Firm 2024 in Essex’.
For me, one of the most valuable aspects of further and higher education is the confidence it gives you, along with the connections you make along the way. I would highly recommend South Essex Colleges Group and University Centre South Essex. The teaching is supportive, and the course prepares you well for the realities of the industry.
Looking ahead, I want to continue growing my business, expand my team and eventually open my own studio.
