My name is Kevin Inns, and I studied with South Essex Colleges Group. This is my story.
I enrolled on the Warehouse and Storage Skills Bootcamp at Thurrock College, a fully funded five-week course designed to give learners the qualifications and skills needed to progress in the logistics industry.
Before starting the course, I already had some experience working in warehousing, but I needed to gain my RTITB Forklift Licence in order to return to the sector. The Bootcamp gave me exactly what I needed, not only the qualifications, but also the confidence to get back into work and the right mindset for the role.
I attended the course four days a week and learned from knowledgeable tutors using industry-standard equipment. This hands-on experience was really valuable, as it allowed me to practise using the same tools and machinery that I now use every day in my job.
By the end of the course, I had achieved my RTITB Forklift Licence, CSCS Card and other important industry qualifications. Shortly after completing the Bootcamp, I secured a role at Global Freight Connections (GFC) Ltd.
In my current role, I carry out a range of tasks including running manifests, unloading lorries and loading freight into racking systems. I actually found out about the opportunity through my tutor at Thurrock College, who encouraged me to apply, which made a big difference.
Settling into the role was made easier by the skills and experience I gained during the course. I feel more confident in my abilities and continue to build on what I have learned each day.
Looking back, the Bootcamp was a really positive experience. It was a supportive and professional environment, and it gave me a clear route back into bonded warehousing. My advice to anyone considering it would be simple: go for it. The opportunity is there, and you can achieve your goals with the right support.
Employer Perspective
South Essex Colleges Group spoke to Global Freight Connections (GFC) Ltd about how Kevin has settled into his role and his transition from the Skills Bootcamp.
Kevin has settled well into the GFC team as his positive attitude and willingness to learn means he’s continuing to develop his confidence within his role. Describing him as a “breath of fresh air”.
GFC emphasised that Skills Bootcamps and apprenticeship partnerships with SECG are incredibly valuable in identifying good quality candidates, including individuals who may not ordinarily be able to access job adverts on social media. These partnerships provide employers with access to jobseekers who hold the industry-required qualifications such as the RTITB Forklift Licence and CSCS Cards for warehousing, and are ready to work.
If Kevin’s story has inspired you to take the next step, our Skills Bootcamps are a great way to gain industry-recognised qualifications and move into employment quickly. Whether you are looking to start something new or return to your career, South Essex Colleges Group is here to help you succeed.
