My name is Zack Short, and I am studying BA (Hons) Criminology and Forensic Investigation at the University Centre South Essex. This is my story.
I first joined the college in 2017 and started on a Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science. At the beginning, it was challenging, especially as I live with a visual impairment, but with time and support, I was able to settle in and progress. I went on to complete a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science over the next two years, where I made friends and grew in confidence.
After that, I decided to continue my studies and moved on to a degree in Criminology and Forensic Investigation. I was interested in understanding crime and felt that this path could lead to a meaningful and engaging career. Throughout my journey, I have been supported by an incredible team who have worked with me over several years and really understand my needs.
My visual impairment is caused by a rare condition called Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum. It affects different parts of the body, including my eyes, which impacts my vision significantly. There are times when I experience eye strain and headaches, especially if I push myself too hard, which can make studying more difficult.
The support I receive at college has made a huge difference. Educational communicators have worked alongside me throughout my studies, helping me access learning in ways that suit me. This includes support with note taking, specialist equipment, tactile resources and adapted materials such as braille and graphs. Their dedication and understanding have helped me stay on track and continue progressing.
Thanks to this support, I have been able to continue building my knowledge and confidence. I have also achieved my GCSE English during my time at college, which is something I feel proud of.
If you are thinking about coming to college and have concerns about a disability or additional needs, my advice would be to go for it. It can feel daunting, but there is support available and people who genuinely want to help you succeed.
Looking ahead, I hope to build a career in the criminology field. I am particularly interested in areas such as crime analysis, research and policy, where I can work with data to better understand crime and contribute to making a difference.
