Tommy Davis

My name is Tommy Davis, and I studied the Level 3 Extended Diploma in TV and Film Production at South Essex Colleges Group. This is my story.

Before joining SECG, I had always been obsessed with cameras and filmmaking. From making home videos as a kid to creating skateboarding films with my friends, I knew this was something I wanted to pursue seriously. I chose to study at SECG because I wanted to develop my skills in a professional environment and be surrounded by like-minded creatives.

During my time on the course, I gained a strong understanding of all stages of production, from planning and shooting to editing. It helped me become a more detailed and confident filmmaker, and I also learned how to collaborate effectively with others, which is essential in this industry.

The facilities at SECG made a huge difference to my learning. Having access to a full blackout TV studio, multicamera setups and professional lighting rigs gave me real insight into how productions work at an industry level. It allowed me to experiment, improve and build confidence using professional equipment.

After completing my course, I went on to study at London South Bank University, continuing to develop my skills and build my experience. I now work as a freelance film director, specialising in music videos and branded content, working with artists, brands and record labels around the world.

My role involves overseeing every stage of production, from developing ideas and creating shot lists to directing on set and editing the final product. I built my career step by step, starting with small projects and gradually working with bigger artists and brands while continuing to refine my craft.

One of my favourite memories from college is spending time with friends and enjoying the creative environment. Those moments helped shape my experience just as much as the work itself.

Some of my proudest achievements include travelling internationally for work, collaborating with major artists such as Stormzy and working with high-profile brands. I’ve also been nominated for several industry awards, including the UK Music Video Awards, the NME Awards and the Young Arrows for Best New Director.

Currently, I am working on developing a new television project called Cash in Hand, a series based on working-class experiences in Essex. The project has already gained strong interest, with a teaser receiving over 100,000 views, and I am aiming to raise funding before pitching it to major broadcasters.

My ambition is to see this project commissioned as a full television series and to continue growing my career as a director.
