My name is Shauna Sinead Knowles, and I am studying the Level 3 Maritime Engineering Technician Apprenticeship at South Essex Colleges Group. This is my story.
Before choosing this apprenticeship, I had already explored engineering during my time at college. I knew I wanted something practical and hands-on, but I was also looking for a career that offered variety and new challenges every day. Marine engineering stood out to me because it combined all of those things, and it felt like the right path to follow.
Since starting my apprenticeship, I have been able to learn both in college and in the workplace. This has helped me build strong technical skills while also developing important life skills such as communication, teamwork and confidence. Working in a fast-paced environment has given me a better understanding of how the industry operates and has encouraged me to keep pushing myself and learning more.
One of the most rewarding parts of my journey so far has been seeing my confidence grow. Over time, I have become more comfortable working with others, sharing my ideas and taking on new challenges. I have also learned that making mistakes is a normal part of learning, and each experience helps me improve and develop a more positive mindset.
I have particularly enjoyed the practical side of the course. Welding has become one of my favourite skills to develop, and being able to practise regularly has helped me build confidence in my abilities. Attending industry events such as Seawork has also been a great experience. It gave me the opportunity to meet people in the industry, learn about different career paths and gain a wider understanding of the sector.
The equipment and tools we use at South Essex Colleges Group reflect what is used in the workplace, which has made a big difference to my learning. Being able to practise with the same types of equipment helps me feel more prepared and confident when applying my skills in real working environments.
My time at college has helped prepare me not just technically, but professionally as well. I have learned the importance of safe working practices, responsibility and maintaining a professional attitude. These are all essential skills that support me every day in my apprenticeship.
For anyone considering the Maritime Engineering Technician Apprenticeship, my advice would be to stay focused and committed. The course combines both theory and practical learning, so it is important to be prepared for both. Stay open to new opportunities, keep learning and make the most of every experience.
I am proud of how far I have come and grateful for the support and opportunities I have received along the way. This journey has given me a clear direction for my future, and I am excited to continue building my career in the maritime industry.
