Course Overview
The Team Leader / Supervisor Apprenticeship CMI Level 3 supports you to develop the core management and leadership skills needed to lead people and manage day‑to‑day operations effectively.
It is suitable if you are working as, or want to become, a team leader or supervisor, including those at an early stage of their leadership career or those with practical experience who want to strengthen their theoretical understanding of management. Accredited by the Chartered Management Institute, this apprenticeship allows you to learn on the job, applying new skills directly within your role. Learning focuses on building confidence, professionalism and leadership capability while supporting organisational performance and team effectiveness.
The apprenticeship is delivered through a flexible blend of online learning, virtual classroom sessions and on‑campus classes. You will complete online learning through structured materials, alongside regular virtual classroom sessions during term time with a college tutor, and face‑to‑face teaching on campus. This delivery model allows you to balance study with work commitments while benefitting from tutor support and peer discussion.
Throughout the programme, you will develop knowledge and skills across a wide range of management areas. These include principles of management and leadership, managing a team to achieve results, building stakeholder relationships through effective communication, contributing to project delivery, and managing daily activities to meet organisational objectives. You will also develop skills in managing budgets, resources, data and information, alongside focusing on your own personal and professional development.
The apprenticeship places strong emphasis on interpersonal skills, organisational performance and personal effectiveness, helping you lead teams confidently and responsibly. By the end of the programme, you will have developed the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to operate effectively as a team leader or supervisor and continue progressing within management and leadership roles across a wide range of sectors.
You will need to be employed in a trade/industry related to the apprenticeship and you will need to find employment in a related trade/industry before applying for the apprenticeship programme you wish to complete.
Some employers may request additional entry criteria when applying for an apprentice role.
Prior experience may also be considered. You should also have achieved qualifications in English and Maths at a minimum of Level 2 or equivalent.
This apprenticeship is delivered through an Online Virtual Classroom and On Campus model in partnership with Mindful Education. Apprentices study flexible online lessons during allocated work time and attend regular virtual or in person sessions with an experienced college tutor. Lessons are approximately 45 minutes and include interactive activities to support practical learning.
This flexible approach enables apprentices to fit study around work, minimising disruption to employers while applying learning directly in the workplace. Assessment for the CMI Level 3 Diploma in Principles of Management and Leadership is through practical work based assignments.
The end point assessment includes a portfolio of evidence, a knowledge test, and a competency based interview. Apprentices must successfully pass the end point assessment to achieve the apprenticeship certificate.
This course is free to apprentices, as the cost is paid by your employer Large companies can fund the course using their apprenticeship levy.
SMEs can access government funding to subsidise the cost by 95%
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship there is an opportunity to study CMI courses at level 5 and higher.
