Colleges Week 2020 – supporting people and communities

South Essex College is supporting Colleges Week this week. Today’s theme is supporting people and communities. The college has created a 2020 mental health strategy to support students and staff mental health by ensuring there is advice and guidance available to all who need it.

The impact of Covid-19 has had a profound effect on well-being, it’s vital in these times that services are available to help people. The college has worked hard to put in place several channels to offer support to students, apprentices and staff who are experiencing challenges.

The college launched a partnership with the leading online national mental health service ‘Togetherall’ to provide a completely free platform to access safe, anonymous mental health support.

Togetherall is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and is clinically proven to help those who are struggling with stress, isolation, anxiety, depression and other common mental health issues. It will provide subscribers with access to community and professional support, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The college also works with Education Mental Health Practitioners, EHMPs, to support the mental health and well-being of students.

EMHPs are part of Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs), a new government initiative that promotes good emotional well-being and mental health by helping children and their families through prevention, early intervention and education. The practitioners will support young people in a variety of ways through groupwork, workshops and guided self-help sessions.
