Sophie wins national golf tournament

A South Essex College sport student has won a prestigious national golfing tournament.

Sophie Wheeler, who studies on the College’s Golf Academy course, came first in the England Girls’ County Champion of Champions competition.

She completed the course at Frilford Heath Golf Club in Oxforshire in one-over-par for 36 holes. She has now been selected for England 18’s regional squad.

Sophie, 16, from Billericay, said: “This one meant a lot, especially as my dad caddied for me. I played well in practice and I mapped out where I needed to be and where not to miss.”

Aaron Quinn, Head of the College’s Golf Academy, said: “This tournament win is huge for Sophie and gives her the national recognition she deserves, this win is a culmination of years of hard work and dedication.

“I am so proud to have her as a part of the Golf Academy where I will be supporting her over the next few years to achieve more fantastic results and ultimately reach the pinnacle of women’s golf.”
