Lego game master speaks to students

Media students at South Essex College’s Southend Campus were treated to a talk from a world class computer games character animator.

Opinder Chaggar has worked on popular game titles such as the Lego Batman series and Harry Potter.

The Pod lecture theatre was packed as students listened eagerly to Opinder’s story, as he explained how he came to work for some of the world’s biggest gaming companies.

Opinder also offered the students lots of career and industry advice. He said: “Surround yourself with people that are better than you. It’ll keep your ego out of it and you’ll realise there is a lot to learn.”

He showed his captivated audience show reels and recommend books and courses for them to check out to further increase their skills.

Games design, animation and media production students had plenty of questions for Opinder. They wanted to know his inspirations, what was next for his career and how to get employers to take notice of their work.

Lewis Tansley, 16, from Hockley, studies Level 3 Computer Games Development. He said: “I found the talk very helpful. The advice about how you can break into the industry if you work hard and develop your show reel was great.”

Animation & Games Design lectures, Tammy Ellis and Luke Bridger, organised the talk. Tammy said: “We offer a great range of amazing guest speakers to the students. Opinder gave a very honest and informative account of how he has progressed through this creative industry.”
