Celebration Day success

Grays town centre came alive this weekend with South Essex College’s Celebration Day event, to mark the opening of the new Thurrock Campus.

On Saturday, student applicants and members of the community got their first glimpse inside the new £45 million campus and a chance to see the fantastic facilities on offer.

The amazing outdoor amphitheatre played host to a variety of performers from the local community and South Essex College plus the headline act  X Factor finalists, Kingsland Road. Chafford Hundred Choir, Thurrock Youth Big Band and the Woodside steel band entertained visitors in the stunning entrance plaza.

Kingsland Road, said: “We loved performing as part of Celebration Day, especially in the amphitheatre. It’s a great space – what other college has its own amphitheatre? We wish our colleges had these kind of facilities, is there still time to enrol?”

Other activities during the day included make-up artist demonstrations, a Heart FM photo booth, comedy Mad Professors and a delicious hog roast BBQ.

Student Services were available to help visitors with careers advice, application and course enquiries. There was also an information exhibition in one of the seminar rooms with exhibiters like Barclays, Specsavers and REED NCFE on hand to give tips and advice to students who plan to start at the College in September.

Goody bags were available for new students who only had great things to say about the Thurrock Campus.

Friends Kira Henderson and Jordanne Devereaux, both 16 and from Laindon attended the day together, they plan to enrol on the hair and media make-up course. Kira said: “I’m very excited about starting here in September, the campus looks awesome. It’s so nice and big.” Jordanne added: “I didn’t know what to do after finishing school but one look at this amazing campus and it’s convinced me to come here.”

Samuel Chant, 17, from Grays said: “I’m a local lad and it’s brilliant to have this new building in Grays town centre, I can’t wait to see the facilities.”

Kylie Warren, 17, from Poplar, London said: “I want to go to college outside of London for a change of scenery and this place looks great, plus South Essex College offers a lot of different courses."

Angela O'Donoghue, Principal and Chief Executive of South Essex College, said: “Celebration Day was a great success, students and the local community had the opportunity to view parts of the new Campus including some of the stunning, industry standard facilities.
