Student Services
From the moment you start considering South Essex College as your study destination, our dedicated Student Services team is on-hand to support you from the time you apply right through to when you finish your studies, and even beyond.
Our expert client advisers can help with everything from choosing a course, through to careers advice and working while studying, to financial guidance, travel assistance, counselling, disability support and child protection issues.
Academic skills support
If you need help with studying either during or even before you start your course, we can discuss your needs and provide assistance. Whether you need to develop your skills in a specific area (e.g. literacy and numeracy, presentations, assignments, time management, research etc.), if English isn’t your first language, or if you have a learning difficulty like dyslexia, we can help you to overcome these obstacles so that you are free to focus on your studies.
English support for speakers of other languages
If English is not your first language you may find additional language support helpful. We can help you to:
- better understand the ideas, language or terms related to your course
- better express your ideas using the appropriate English words and grammar
- practise your ability to speak English and listen to spoken English
- develop your ability to read and write in English
Counselling and personal welfare
We offer a confidential counselling service for you to talk through any issues that are concerning you. Our trained counsellor also works with specialist agencies such as CRUSE and Relate, and where appropriate will be able to refer you to other organisations that can more fully meet your needs.
We have a registered nurse, a sexual health specialist and student peer mentors who can advise you about sexual health and other health issues, as needed.
There is also a College Chaplain on-hand for all students regardless of faith, community or world view who can provide support and care whilst also tackling moral, spiritual, ethical, social and cultural issues.
Childcare
Part-time learners with children of pre-school age may be entitled to a grant from the Access to Learning Fund to cover childcare costs. The College’s Southend Campus has its own nursery, Jungle Cats, which is available to the children of staff and learners who are aged between three months and school age.
