Getting Your Voice Heard

Your student representatives for the following academic year are:

Further Education: Richard Lane
Higher Education: Graham Fuller

Members of all courses have the opportunity, at the start of each academic year, to elect a delegate to attend Faculty Council meetings – a great opportunity to meet other students and staff from your Faculty to discuss both positive and not-so-positive aspects of your experience as a student. At the first meeting of the year, Faculty Councils elect a number of students to attend the Student Council meetings to represent your Faculty.

FE (further education) and HE (higher education) Student Councils form the representative bodies for students across the College through which the interests, concerns and ideas of students can be shared and represented. This provides students with an important forum and a direct link to the senior management of the College.

In addition, both Councils work to arrange events in and around the College such as charity events, student nights and a range of other events, entertainments and activities.

If you’re the sort of person who is reliable and friendly with lots of ideas and a sincere desire to make your College and Community a better place, it might just be worth coming along to a meeting. The operation of the Student Council is reviewed every year and improvements are made to make the experience even better.

To contact either Richard or Graham, pop into Learner Support Services on the ground floor or email:

Student Council

The College belongs to you so the FE Student Council provides an opportunity for students to get involved in decision making and helping to improve your college experience. It also has the responsibility of organising social events and clubs and societies. There is one Senior Student Representative as well as five Council Officers, all of whom are elected from the student cohort and work as a team. Their role is to keep you up to date with news and events via the Student Council Website and to organise meetings where Course Representatives can have their say on various aspects of college life. The College is keen that the ‘Learner Voice’ is heard loud and clear so there is even more opportunity for all students to express opinions on the increasingly popular Student Forum which is facilitated by the Council Officers. During the last year the Council has organised a number of events including the Snowfall Christmas Party at TALK nightclub which was attended by 800 students and raised money for comic relief.

It’s really important to remember that the Student Council belongs to you, so get stuck in and make it work! To find out more email FErep@southend.ac.uk or call into Learner Support Services.

Your student rep

FE student Richard Lane leads the Student Council, which provides opportunities for students to shape the future of their college, get involved in decision-making and improve the social atmosphere with amazing events.

What is your role as Senior Student Representative?

"As the senior representative, my role involves activities both in and out of the office. Meeting with other staff and students, and moderating the forums are part of my everyday college life; other days I could be out of the office organising student nights, talent shows, charity initiatives and overseeing the running of college societies."

Why does the Council exist?

"The Student Council enables us to improve our college and the quality of life outside of the college. It’s an opportunity whereby we can get something done for not only our own benefit, but for others too."

Why should students get involved?

"Contributing to the wider college really gives a sense of personal achievement, but through that effort it benefits all students. If you’re confident, reliable and creative, it provides a perfect opportunity for you to shape your college experience. We work as a team to discuss, suggest and decide on the best future of the College – involving promotion, event management and college strategies. Snowfall ’08 has been our biggest night to date, which was attended by over 800 students and Snowfall ’09 promises to be even bigger."
