Monday, 08 March 2010

Students studying Theatrical & Media Make-up at South Essex College of Further & Higher Education’s Thurrock Campus were treated to an extraordinary workshop from a renowned body painting and airbrush artist whose catalogue of clients include Hollywood heartthrob, Gerard Butler.

The Level 3 students were treated to a workshop given by airbrush expert, Alex Hanson, visiting from the States. Painting from the age of 15, Alex has over 18 years experience in the profession and is well known for his amazing freehand and stencil airbrush techniques.  Participating in many festivals and winning top places in world competitions, Alex recently gained the coveted title of World Champion at the World Body Painting Festival 2008. His works have included editorial, television, film and fashion photoshoots including working on the stars of Hollywood blockbuster 300.

Brazilian-born Alex was invited to the College by Tracie Dodkins, Course Leader for Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT) Professional Media Make-up, through her connections with Paul Hemming at Façade Body Arts Supplies, who supplies the College student kits and who has also worked with Alex Hansen.

Tracie said: “The workshop was a great opportunity for me and the students to see Alex’s phenomenal work. I am very passionate about what we do for our student’s success. This enrichment activity offered students to work with a famous airbrush artiste, exhibiting enthusiasm, talent and dedication to the make-up industry. The day was an amazing inspirational experience.”

Alex devoted a full day to the College, recreating some of his winning designs in front of the awe struck students with three demonstrations and also made time for one-to-one workshops teaching students how to refine their airbrush techniques. He was also on hand to give some valuable advice to the aspiring make-up artists. He said: “It was a pleasure to visit the College. The best way to learn the industry is to learn from working professionals. You are very fortunate to have Tracie, your tutor who is passionate with the make-up industry. Listen, observe and practice makes perfection.”

Of the workshop, one student said: “Wow, it was amazing day. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Alex was brilliant to watch. We gained valuable knowledge and hands on experience.”
