Tutorials, Key Skills and Enrichment are a part of every course, but what are they?
Tutorials
All students are allocated a Personal Tutor to support them through their time at
college. Your tutor is a key member of staff with whom you will meet once a week
for a tutorial session. They will help you to settle into college life, achieve
your academic potential and plan for your future.
In a group session you may be offered guidance on study skills such as managing
your time, preparing a CV, assignment writing, use of the library and learning resources.
Enrichment – making the most of life at College!
All courses contain an element called ‘enrichment’, which covers a vast range of
extra-curricular activities designed to make your College experience more varied
and stimulating.
Sport
Sporting activities are an important part of our enrichment programme and we offer
team sports such as football, netball and basketball as well as College membership
of local gyms at a reduced rate and the opportunity to compete in sports tournaments
through our affiliation to British Colleges’ Sport.
Trips
Each Faculty within the College arranges their own exciting residential visits,
which have included trips to Disneyland, Paris, Media trips to Prague and Barcelona
and various gallery visits to London including the Tate Modern and National Gallery.
Future options
Students interested in higher education are given the opportunity to travel with
the College to UCAS and HE conventions and university open days and events to give
an opportunity to research higher education options.
Short qualifications
You may also have the opportunity to work towards some short course qualifications
such as First Aid, Community Sports Leaders’ Award, LAMDA, Music Theory and the
Food Hygiene Certificate.
What are Key Skills?
Key Skills are a component on all of our courses and are part of a national initiative
to increase student skill levels to meet the changing demands of the world of work
and higher education.
Key Skills are qualifications in their own right and can be taken at Level 1 (Foundation)
through to Level 3 (Advanced).
The three main Key Skills are:
- Communication
- Application of Number
- Information and Communication Technology
The wider Key Skills develop further personal and professional skills:
- Working with others
- Improving Own learning and performance
- Problem solving
Key Skills are invaluable and will help with your College studies by developing
the skills you need to be successful. They will help you with your future career
by building the foundations of core skills, such as communication, numeracy and
information technology, needed by employers and higher education.
How will my Key Skills be assessed?
- For the three main Key Skills, you will need to complete a portfolio of evidence
and pass a test. Some people are exempt from the test – your tutor will advise you.
- For the wider Key Skills, you will need to complete a portfolio of evidence.
