"In September 2006, I started my NVQ Level 2 for Teaching Assistants on the Train
to Gain Scheme at South Essex College. My first impression was one of excitement
but also apprehension as to how I would cope after more than 30 years away from
any kind of studying. After six weeks had passed, I came very close to giving up
altogether as I felt I would not be able to survive through to the end of the course.
Without the full support of my college tutor and family and help and continued reassurance
from the teachers at school, I would not have been able to write this assessment
of my progress to date"

Genesis I.C.EJulie Clark might not have been in education for over 15 years
but that didn’t stop the 33 year old from Westcliff-on-Sea passing her Level 2 NVQ
Team Leading qualification with flying colours. You could say that it was music
to her ears as Julie works for a small Southend-based company, Genesis I.C.E, that
manufacture world class audio equipment and amplifiers for cars that are exported
all over the world. When Julie started the work-based qualification, which meant
she could do the course along side work, she had just been appointed Team Leader
of seven people. Initially Julie had been reluctant to do the course as she did
not think she had the ability to complete it, but after working through the qualification
closely with her Tutor Assessor from South Essex College it soon pumped up
the volume of her confidence.
"I’ve really seen Julie grow in confidence as her course progressed. It was also
a great boost to the rest of the team as Julie’s positiveness really filtered down."
Gordon Taylor , Managing Director of Genesis I.C.E.
"I don’t know what I would have done without the support of my Tutor, Loraine Jibb,
as she really put me at ease as I was really nervous to begin with. The qualification
really opened my eyes and I’m now really keen to take on new challenges."
"When most people think of education they think of going back to school, but this
was great as the classroom came to me if you like. Doing the qualification at work
meant it was part of my work and I could really relate it to what I do in my job.
If I’m honest I really found it quite enjoyable".

Testimonials
Ian Black and Ian McDermott, the local Communication Workers Union (CWU), Union
Learning Reps, would like to thank Adele Rogers and her team for all the hard work
they put into our Open Day on Wednesday 13th May 2009 at Chelmsford Mail Centre.
The presence of the members from the South Essex College, as well as the learning
providers from other institutions, greatly helped boost the profile of our Open
Day event and enabled our future learners to gain an understanding at a far deeper
level that they would have done had it been only the CWU Union Learning Reps in
attendance.
The enthusiasm of the staff throughout the event never waned, and their ability
to engage with potential learners of all levels and explain the content and style
of what was on offer was always appropriate and delivered with such empathy that
all of the staff who visited the Open Day went away with their questions, queries
or worries satisfied.
The surprisingly high uptake on the courses offered from all of the learning providers
in attendance was due in no small part to the professionalism, knowledge and even
appearance of the dedicated team from the South Essex College and the other
providers - and they will have an open invitation to any future events of this type
run here or at any other establishments within their catchment areas.
